Network marketing is a business model that depends on a network of distributors to grow the business. It often involves three types of systematic strategies for making money: lead generation, recruitment, and building and management. There are three different types of network marketing, including single-tier, two-tier and multi-level.

Single-tier network marketing

With single-tier network marketing, you can sign up for their affiliate programs to sell their products or services. You do not need to hire other distributors and all your salary comes from direct sales. Popular beauty company Avon uses single-tier networking marketing.

In some online affiliate programs, you get paid for the traffic you drive to the affiliated website.  Other examples of single-tier network marketing are Pay-per-click and Pay-per-lead.

Two-tier network marketing

Unlike single-tier network marketing, two-tier network marketing involves some recruitment, but your salary does not depend entirely on it. You get paid for direct sales or traffic you drive on the website and referral traffic from affiliates or distributors hired to work within you. 

Multi-level Network Marketing

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) is a distribution-based network marketing dwelling on two or more levels. Two other types of network marketing strategies are marketing-based networks. Some MLM programs allow you to earn five or more levels of money, which can be an incentive for recruitment. Examples of MLM businesses include Lularo, Magnetic Sponsors, and Amway.

Network Marketing as a Business Model

If you are thinking of starting a business that relies on any type of multi-level marketing, make sure you have a solid marketing team at the very core of your organization. The stronger your marketer base, the more likely you are to have long-term success.

Not everyone who wants to sell something is going to be good, but if you have someone excited about your business that might not be right for your sales team, find another place for them. Marketing is critical to the success of any business, but don't forget that honesty and genuine enthusiasm for a company or product is a form of marketing in and of itself. If your sales team has your only enticement money, they may cut corners or mislead others in an experiment to make more money for themselves.
